Summary

In this 80-min session, we'll give you a first glimpse at Needs-Based Communication* (NBC) and how it contrasts with the typical conversations we have when emotions rise.   At the core of the session is the Five Chairs Activity where, not only will you hear the difference in words, but you'll experience the difference in underlying energy that you feel. Additionally, the Five Chairs Activity provides a framework for learning NBC that will prepare you for Course 1 | How am I Showing Up as a Leader: Enhancing Self-Awareness & Self-Responsibility | Needs-Based Communication Core Concepts within the Conscious Leader Program.

The concepts introduced in this session include the four parts of Needs-Based Communication (observation, feelings, needs, requests) and the four skills sets of Needs-Based Communication (pausing when reactive, self-connection, authentic expression, empathic listening).  Each participant will apply the learnings of the session to their own work or home relationship that they want to enhance. Note that while our focus is on work relationships, the skills and mindsets to be learned applies equally to both.  Come and see the beautiful simplicity of needs-based communication concepts, along with the invitation—and challenge—to develop a new perspective of seeing people through human needs.

NOTE: This session is the 4th session of the Introduction to Conscious Leadership series

Outline of Session

  • The Five Chairs Activity - how you react depends on where you focus your attention

  • Recognizing our own reactivity

  • Moving from Unconscious Reaction to Conscious Response

  • Communicating without blame: the four parts of Needs-Based Communication

  • Self-Responsibility: The four skill sets of Needs-Based Communication

  • Workplace Application example: e.g. Conscious Feedback or Mutual Accountability

*Needs-Based Communication is based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg, which he called "Nonviolent Communication™" or NVC.

I have chosen to call the process Needs-Based Communication (NBC) for two reasons:

  1. Human needs are the heart of the process.

  2. I have wanted to avoid the common initial reaction from people in business that "... we're not a violent place."

Within this course and in related materials, any of these names or acronyms may be used, and they all refer to the same process.

Gregg Kendrick has been a Certified CNVC Nonviolent Communication™ Trainer since January 2006.
